Search for contacts in Empathy

Asked by Rod Davis

It would be nice if there was a way to search for contacts, instead of manually scanning through your contacts list. If there already is a search function for Empathy, where is it?

Hi Rod Davis

To search for a contact in Empathy. Make sure that the contact list window is selected. Then just start typing the name of the contact you want.

Although this is not obvious to a new user so maybe this should be changed in an update to have a dedicated button in the menus or something?

Hope that helps.

Hi Andrew

That doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm running 11.04 64 bit.
With the contact window selected, typing doesn't bring up any search dialog, nothing.

Ctrl+F does bring up a "Search Contacts" window, but it does not work.

Any thoughts?

Hi Hongwei

On Empathy on Ubuntu 11.04 32 Bit. For me if I have the contact window selected and I then start typing, it filters the contacts. On the other hand by pressing Ctrl+F it brings up a "Search Contacts" window as you described above. So it is down to personal preference in what you use.

Hope that clarifies that.

Neither works for me :(

Simply typing does nothing except lose focus on the window. Ctrl+F brings up the Search window, but it does not work.
Could 64 bit really be responsible for all these problems?

Hi Hongwei

From the contact list you should be able to get Chat->Search For Contacts from the menubar. Does this work? If not try running empathy in terminal and see if there is any output there.

Hope that helps.

Same problem (and more!) here! Ever tried skype? if you close the window of the application, the program stays resident! Still visible for your friends, but you don't see them talking to you...

Ubuntu 11.10 on 64-bit machines is really a mess. Lot of things doesn't work as they should. Looking forward to 12.04. If this bugs are not eliminated, I'm going back to 10.10.
