Ubuntu supports Google Talk messaging through the Pidgin Internet Messenger.

Pidgin does not support voice chat yet. If you want voice chat, you can use Jabbin (a KDE application).
You can download it here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jabbin/jabbin_2.0beta2-1_i386.deb

After it is installed, it will *not* show up in your menu, but you can open it by pressing Alt-F2, typing 'jabbin', and then pressing Enter.

To set up your Google Voice Chat account:
Under the "Account" tab, use your complete Google Mail address as the user name. Under the "Connection" tab, check "Use SSL encryption (to server)", "Allow Plaintext Login" and "Manually Specify Server Host/Port". The server is “talk.google.com” or “gmail.com” and ports 443 or 5223 should be used.

There have been many reported issues with sound in Ubuntu using Jabbin. The issue has not yet been resolved.

However, there is another application that supports Google Talk that you might want to try. It is called Coccinella. You can download it at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/coccinella/Coccinella-0.96.6Linux-x86.tar.gz
Just extract the file called "Cocccinella-0.96.6.bin" onto the desktop and rename it to get rid of the ".bin" part.

Instructions on setting it up with Google Talk can be found at http://coccinella.im/faq/googletalk . Use the "second way". Happy VoIPing!

Does Coccinella work?

After a while I figured out how to get coccinella to register into gtalk

(for the records: instead of trying to add an account, just select Action > Login and then fill in the details as described in the faq)

However, there seems to be no VoIP support for gtalk at all in coccinella. This is mentioned here: http://coccinella.im/faq/voip

The "phone" icon does not turn in gtalk chat windows, or at least not under ubuntu 8.04 / coccinella 0.96.8

There's not even an audio settings configuration in coccinella.

Too bad for google not spending an infinitesimal fraction of their earnings and have someone write a FOSS client to their googletalk service

I'm sorry that Coccinella did not support the proper method. There is good
news, however. A Google Summer of Code project for this year is Jingle video
and voice chat in
Kopete<http://code.google.com/soc/2008/kde/appinfo.html?csaid=BE4A750E102C55BA>,
so you won't have to wait too much longer.

Google talk voice functionality has been implemented in a new application called Empathy. You can download it from the Ubuntu 8.10 universe repository.

Using System → Administration → Software sources [Ubuntu software] please enable the Universe the repository.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install empathy

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
