How to enter chinese in Empathy

Using the latest Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). Using ibus to enter Chinese characters in applications such as OpenOffice. However, ibus does not recognize Empathy as an "input window", so am unable to input Chinese characters (or any other foreign languages) in my chat windows. How can I work around this?
