Only native resolution available

Asked by Sandro Mani

I am using Intrepid x64, up-to-date on a Dell Inspiron 1720 (geforce 8600m GT, 180.22 driver). My problem is that though I DO get the native resolution from the screen of 1920x1200, I cannot select any other resolution. And I also suspect that something with the dpi is wrong, as for example in the log-in screen the font is somewhat badly proportioned (the dots in the password field are slightly larger than the field itself for example). In hardy I partially solved the problem by adding some modelines to xorg.conf, but this does not work anymore in intrepid. Anyway, I am just wondering, is the EDID firmware of my monitor itself garbage or might there be some other cause to the issue? It remember it working on windows when I got the laptop, also, trying with ddcprobe I get edidfail (although ddcprobe is said to be deprecated and only reading EDID version 1). The issue does not seem to be tied to the proprietary nvidia driver - same problem using the opensource version.
Just in case, here are the EDID bytes of my screen:

You can try using EnvyNG to fully install the resticted nvidia drivers. Follow this link to find out how to do this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual#Installation%20with%20Envy/EnvyNG
One installed, you'll be able to change the resolution at:
System->Administration->NVIDIA X Server Settings.
Hope this helps, let me know.

This is the recommended way since Hardy. Good luck.

Thanks for your answer. I stumbled accross this post http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81635 and it turns out that the EDID of my display is indeed garbage. Using the Phoenix EDID Designer, I noticed that in Color / Established Timings, none of the present modes was actually selected. Selecting them all, I get all those resolutions plus plenty more!
I therefore guess it is an nvidia linux driver issue being very strict on the edid (plus of course the firmware of the LCD itself).
Note on envy: i tired it plenty of times in the past, though it didn't really make a difference whether I installed a driver via envy, restricted-driver-notifier or manually - no surprise beeing the main cause of the problem hardware related.
