It will be easier to help you if you could answer these questions:
- Which program are you using? Evolution? Thunderbird? Another program?
- Is there any error message? For example, in Evolution you can click on an icon with an exclamation mark and the program will give you details to your problem.

Just saw that there is no error message when the password prompt fails...

Okay, maybe the server settings are incorrect. Can you please
- give me the name of your mail provider, and
- tell me your server settings? You'll find them in Edit > Mail Accounts. There you select the account that causes the problem and press "Edit". On the "incoming mail" (or similar) tab please give me all the settings that are made.

Password prompts fail due to gross bugs or a valid case..you are entering the wrong password.

Try this:

Start Evolution from the panel menu.

Once running click on Send/Receive. If it prompts for password enter it here.

From the menu "Edit -> Preferences", click on 'Mail Accounts'.
Click on the pop account in question, then click on Edit.
Once the Account Editor opens click on the 'Receiving Email' tab.
Under Authentication Type ensure 'Password' is selected and 'Remember password' is checked so it will stop prompting you.
Click Ok, then close the preferences window.

Click on Send/Receive.

HTH's.
