email won't work, doesn't ask for password

Asked by Phil Hotter

when setting up email account in evolution, there is no place for password or port. when evolution is started it is looking to the email site (says it is) but can't log on, however never asks for password.

Oh, are you suggesting that evolution does not work and therefore mozilla should be used?
tried using mozilla, and although seems to allow more input options, has same result of not logging in to email server.

Hi Phil,

Are you sure the account set up is correct? If the password is not being requested it sounds like the set up of the account may be incorrect. Do you get a time out message or any type of message from the application?

I just checked my email settings for evolution, and for the receiving email tab,

Server type = imap
server: imap.gmail.com
Username: myusername

Use secure connection: SSL encryption

Authentication Type
Password : Check for supported types

Remember password box = checked

Sending Email Tab
Server Type: smtp.gmail.com
Server requires authentication = checked

Use secure Connection: SSL Encryption

Authentication
Type: PLAIN Check for Supported Types
UserName = myusername
Remember Password = checked

If you use the same configuration, what happens?

Thanks
Paul

If this doesn't work, my only other suggestion would be to go to the ubuntu software repository, uninstall evolution, reboot and reinstall evolution, and then set up your email again and see if that allows you to connect.

Hello,

Please note that the user name is the full email address i.e. <email address hidden>.

The ports are 993 in and 465 out.

Regards,

Allan

Hi ahambidge,

The user name on my settings is not the full email address...it is only the username.

@ahambidge,

Hello Paul,

When you login to gmail on the web you only use the user name without the @gmail. However in Evolution and Mozilla Thunderbird you have to use the full email address.

Regards,

Allan :)

Have re-installed evolution, and also tried setting up Thunderbird. still same result in all, for all email servers (work one, hotmail and ihug) times out - no connection made. have checked that settings are identical to those working in windows outlook. is definitely connected to Internet (as per this!)

can't help thinking that I am missing some really basic Ubuntu thing.

All these also work on my smart-phone (android) which I had no problem setting up.

Try to don't check the box "Remember password".

Can you help with this problem?
