Evolution authentication password

Asked by David Hogan

I'm trying to use Evolution for my emails. I can send emails OK but I cannot receive them. I get a message asking for an authentication password, but my server does not require such a password. I have tried using my own email password but this does not work.

What's your email provider (Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo...) ?

It's "talktalk". I'm in England. I know, you've never heard of talktalk.

you said "imap: mail.talktalk.net", as i read it's not imap protocol but pop3.
Put mail.talktalk.net in server address for pop3 protocol.

No good. I'm still getting the message asking for the password for my POP server. I notice that it will only take POP and not POP3. Is this significant?

I don't think.
Did you put your full email address in "username" ?

Yes,I have tried it using my full email address and with only the first part of it but I still get the same message asking me for my POP password.

In "username", try "<email address hidden>".

I tried that. No luck, I'm afraid. I notice that in Account Editor under Receiving Email, there are seven choices for Authentication type. My server talktalk requires no authentication. I don't know what all these choices mean but I just chose "login" at random because I had to choose one of them.

I think you should try all options one by one ;)

I tried all seven choices but each one asked for the POP password.

i think it's time to:
- try thunderbird
or
- contact talktalk
or
- find others talktalkers
or
- redirect all your mails from talktalk to a classic mail provider like hotmail, gmail...
