cannot receive mail from evolution mail

Asked by ian

i can send e-mail ok with evolution mail but when i try to receive mail i get this message:

Unable to connect to POP server pop.mail.yahoo.com
Error sending password: -ERR [AUTH] invalid user/password
Please enter the POP password for "<email address hidden>" on host "pop.mail.yahoo.com"

I use "smtp.ntworld.com" to send my mail (my ISP) which works fine but im now, after 10 hours trying to solve this problem im tired and weary. Ive noticed that others have had similar problem, why is this so difficult to do ? Please help or the cat gets it. (joke)
PS. i use Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy), i like because i like the challenge but hey , can only take so much

May i suggest you to try with Thunderbird as mail client

Thunderbird: mail/news client with RSS and integrated spam filter support
Thunderbird is a lightweight mail/news/RSS client, based on the Mozilla suite.
It supports different mail accounts (POP, IMAP, Gmail), has an integrated learning Spam filter, and offers easy organization of mails with tagging and virtual folders. Also, more features can be added by installing extensions.

To install Thunderbird simply search select and add it to your system using the System→Add/remove menu item

To install Thunderbird using terminal

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install thunderbird

You will find Thunderbird into Applications→Internet menu

Hope this helps

Forget evoluition! It's a stupid mail client. Because you can't delete messages - it's horrible.

Try Thunderbird and you will get a perfect mail client.

Hope it helps.

Big thanks go out to marcobra and peter for taking the time out to help me, very much appreciated.
First time ive used the Terminal in Ubuntu, fear of the unknown i suppose, would like to get to know how to use it more. Is there a tutorial available to help me get started.?

Eh! eh! i love the power of the "bash" "shell" which you are using when you open a terminal, this might be a good starting point:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

http://www.ss64.com/bash/

Don't forget the useful command "man" to get help on commands you can type... for example:

man sudo
man apt-get

will give you the options helps of the sudo and apt-get commands...

Hope this helps

You can also try "mutt" a terminal mail user agent (to check receive and send mail from terminal)

you can install it from terminal typing:

sudo apt-get install mutt

and rut it typing:

mutt

Hope this helps
