Why not use a git version?

FFmpeg has a very fast development and the "stable" releases become obsolete quickly.

Since version 6.1, there are tons of improvments in the git repository (they use git since the new team took over Niedermayer's leadership).

chromium-codecs-ffmpeg I think is using a development version already.

Please consider using a newer FFmpeg version in Natty.

ffmpeg is maintained in debian and is auto-imported into ubuntu. To date, I don't think canonical have added much resources to maintaining a custom set of ffmpeg packages.

0.6.1 is maintained there, but no git version is maintained.

This is imported automatically into ubuntu:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/ffmpeg

There are howtos on how to compile a git version; There may be a PPA, I have not had a look.

FFMpeg is behind most of the video playback in linux, keeping a separate version to debian would undoubtedly be a lot of work.
