when attempting to open email, an error message "cannot connect to server" appears - can this be corrected without external hard drive?

this seems to be a network connectivity or email server isssue and this has nothing to do with an external hard drive.
You might want to check

-connectivity to internet
-your mail server is functional
-your account settings on email client
