What are you trying to play? And from where?

Downloaded a .wmv file. Firefox asked what to play the download with and gave me a choice of MOVIE PLAYER after which I get the TOTEM....... error message above.

Also Banshee won't play MP3 files imported from my windows folder. Just stays idle when play is selected.

sudo apt-get -y install ubuntu-restricted-extras

May help

Wasn't able to get TERMINAL to open up. When I click on the TERMINAL is says starting with a little icon spinning and then it quits. TERMINAL used to work as I used it for my last problems on sound.

press CTRL+ALT+F1 and run the command there instead

Dick (oldcoot999) said :

CTRL-ALT-F1 did open a full screen terminal. Had a hard time figuring how to sign on but finally got to enter the "sudo apt-get" command. It done lots of stuff and then the package configuration at the screen titled "configuring ttf-mscore-fonts-installer. Showed a full screen of EULA stuff and I scrolled down to the bottom. There wasn't any clue of how to accept the EULA. I tried enter key and all the function keys and when I pressed F12 it said I declined the EULA and did not complete the installation.

Also the only way I can get out of the full screen terminal is to press the off button and shutdown, and then power back on.

Use TAB and ENTER to accept

Was able to use the regular TERMINAL window from the pulldown menu.
The sudo apt-get command said ubuntu-restricted-areas is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove, and 7 not upgraded.

Tried the WMV download and it actually went to the download screen but when the player started, got the same TOTEM error as before.

Get the same TOTEM/GSTREAM error panel using any of the included video and audio players on 11.04 except
 VLC works on everything.

Banshee just hangs when trying to play a mp3.
Movie player gets Totem could not startup
Failed to create a GStreamer play object. Please check your GStreamer installation.
Rhythmbox music player gets Playback Error
Failed to create playbin2 element; check your GStreamer installation

Hope this helps someone to fix this problem.

Many Thanks ......

Still have the same problems with GSTREAMER.

I added additional information after item #12 help person gave up on problem.

Still not working in all video/movie applications except VLC and SMPLAYER.

I tried installing all references to GSTREAMER in package manager with no change in all video/movie players mentioned in item #15 above.

Natty is EOL so you will get zero updates and zero support anywhere.

That's OK.  At least it works.   Had probelms with 11.10, 12.04, 12.10 so I'm staying with 11.04.
