done. checked these settings, no change. I have tried toggling these settings as well, to no effect.

firefox 3.0, with the same settings, on the same system, has no issue with connecting to https sites.

I suspect it is an issue with the ubuntu jaunty build of 3.5, rather then a generic firefox 3.5 issue, because I use 3.5 on a XP machine at work without problems.

Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Protocols - Use SSL
Make sure it's ticked

Good luck and regards from

Both Use SL 3.0 & Use TLS 1.0 are ticked in Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Encryption.
I even toggled those settings off and then on again, but no go.
These are the same settings that firefox 3.0 uses, and it works. the problem only appears in firefox 3.5

Fixed by creating a new Firefox 3.5 profile.
This is done via: alt-F2 > firefox-3.5 -ProfileManager
