Using the search and replace function, how can you replace a character with a tab character?

Using the search and replace edit function, I'd like to replace characters with a tab, but the tab character is used to skip to the next field. So how can I do it? I assume that there's some meta character to use instead.

Copy a TAB space and then use the search function, paste in the TAB in the replace with box etc
