sound in both laptop speaker as well as in headphones

when i connect headphone i get sound not only in my headphones but also in laptop's speaker. Is there a way, that when i connect headphones i will get sound in headphones only and when i disconnect them then speakers will work. And couldn't understand about PCM and front's function.

1.- open the gnome-volume-control
2.- then go to Edit --> Preferences
you'll see among others, one option that says something like "Headphone Jack Sense"
3.- click on the check box to enable it and close the preferences windows
4.- go to Switches tab
5.- check the box of "Headphone Jack Sense"

check if it works, if not, please provide more information about your soundcard, like the output of the command "lspci|grep audio"

hi..thanx this has solved the problem ....but got another problem....i have a logitech usb headphone .....when it comes to sound it works properly but mic doesn't work tried a lot but can't figure out...anyway thanx for ur help so far

Hello

 What is the equivalent of the gnome-volume-control's Headphone Jack Sense in Kubuntu 7.10? KMix is not having any such controls.
I have the problem that though I plug in my headphones, there is no sound in the headphones and the speakers continue to function.

hey what i did was i just muted the volume from through the speaker icon in
the system tray like i clicked and then muted the volume and it worked fine
for me ...if you can try that

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on an IBM ThinkPad R52 and I can only listen to sound through BOTH the speakers and the headphones. If I mute the master as Rahul suggested, no sound is played at all. There is no checkbox that exists for 'Headphone Jack Sense', so what can I do?

my media player plays but the voluume is very low even though i increase to maximum so how do i get the volume high
