i have a problem with my on-board sound card...

I have an on-board sound card which under Windows OS can play on 5.1 channels(using its program.. C-media .. i don't know exactly the name, which i think it's an emulator..) but in Ubuntu i can only get sound on 2 channels, and i want it on 5.1 cause' i have 5.1 speaker system and on 2 chan i can't hear the bass... what can i do... i'm using xmms as audio player.. and i've tried to set it up from volume control... but with no results.. Please HELP...

xmms player keeps telling me my sound card is not plugged in when it is. It will play for a while then gives the message. I simply double click on an mp3 and it starts playing again. Never did this with previous versions.
