Kevin,

Sound recorder is a utility to record sound from Microphone, Line-in, Aux etc
You can't record off the internet.

If you can give us some more detail about what you are trying to record, maybe we could suggest an application to do so.

With Regards,
Zombie.

He answered my question because all I won't to know was does record like sound of the internet and the thing that solved it was "You can't record off the internet." Which is ok by me because I have a computer program on windows I haven't tryed yet. and if it does work I will just use windows for that.

I can record using Sound using qarecord

Using System->Administration->Software sources [Ubuntu software] please enable all the repositories.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade
sudo aptitude install qarecord

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You will find qarecord under the Applications->Sound & Video

Hope this helps

You can record from the Internet. I just did it. click on the volume control icon and when it opens; click Edit, Preferences, then scroll down to Mix or Mix Mono and check the box. Then click on "Switches" and check the box beside "Mix" or "Mix Mono". Then use "mix" in the "Record From Input:" Drop down box in Gnome Sound Recorder.

Hope this helps.

Well, CGraham provided good help I think, however, it doesnt' seem to apply to the newest version? I tried its help file but it's SO outdated and it only has 2 pages!
The stuff he mentions are no longer in Sound Recorder.

What is Capture? What is Capture Mux? What is DIgital? How do I record What I Hear, not What I Say?

Much later, but still helpful to anyone searching for an answer, I hope, having consulted CGraham's advice above, although outdated, leading me in the right direction.
Using the latest updated Ubuntu (Linux Mint) based software, I managed to record streaming audio files with (Gnome) Sound Recorder as follows:

Access settings as follows:

 open Sound Recorder
click on File => Volume Control (opens Volume Control box)
in Volume Control ensure Device is set to Alsa mixer (VIA 8237 is what I've got)
click on Preferences (opens Volume Control Preferences box)
 What I have clicked are:
 Master
 PCM
 Microphone
 Capture
 Mix
click on each of the tabs in the Volume Control box to ensure:
that the volume is turned up sufficiently (about three quarters of the way up for Playback, and half way up for Recording)
that the "audio recording" doovey is not clicked "off" with a red cross over it
that in the Switches tab Mix is ticked
options then shows "Input 1" for me, even though I have not ticked an Input box in the Volume Control Preferences box
 close the Volume Control box
that should be it - Sound Recorder should now record any audio stream playing on the internet.
