just installed ubuntu and cannot get sound at all what steps should i take?????

What kind of soundcard do you have?
Do you have multiple soundcards (perhaps an onboard soundcard and an
extra one)?
Which version of Ubuntu do you use?

breezy badger and just the stock intel sound card

That says it all, your volume is muted :)

In the sound mixer (applications -> sound & video -> volume control) you
should click on the little speaker icon under the volume sliders to
unmute it.

actually un muted it but still have no sound and yes
speaker is on

Then please run amixer again and attach the new output. You may have
missed a few, or the mixer application may be missing something.

Please do it like this: amixer > temporary_file
and then paste the contents of the file named temporary_file. The first
time you pasted the output of amixer, you missed some of the output.

So your headphone is still off

And the surround channel is off

If those controls aren't visible in the volume control on the menu,
select edit -> preferences and enable those controls.

Alternatively, you may have more luck with the 'alsamixer' command in
the terminal (maximize your terminal window when trying it).

With the arrow keys you switch between controls and increase/decrease
volume. With 'm' you toggle mute ('00' under a slider means not muted,
'MM' means muted).

Let me know if this solves it for you.

I asked on #alsa on freenode and crimsun advised that I try different combinations of:
# amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 1, 2 and 3
with
# amixer set 'External Amplifier' off or on

I've tried all possible combinations and sound did not play back. I've even tried
# amixer set 'Channel Mode' 2ch
and tried all the combinations again, still, no sound.

This is on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, I will try to reproduce on Edgy Knot 1 as soon as I have a chance, and provide more feedback.

I have also the same pb on ac97 with the Dapper Drake. No sound on digital SPDIF output.

Can you help with this problem?
