how to make laptop as a wifi router?

Asked by swamina

Hi,
I have a hpcompaq laptop with wifi. And i am having a wired broadband connection, which will provide internet for only one laptop. But i want to use two more laptops. Is it possible to make my laptop as a wireless router to provide access for few more laptops to use the broadband? And the other laptops are xp its not linux. will there be any conflict between them on doing so?...
Important thing is my isp provided a user name and password for accessing internet. so switches and hubs are not working. As all the users are not getting authenticated simultaneously.Thats why i want to connect it through wifi.
Can any one help me out of it.from basic step by step procedure......

Thanks in advance.

I suggest buying a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router and then flashing it with DD-WRT firmware.

You can get the DD-WRT firmware image here:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

I think it will be a more stable and energy efficient solution in the long term.

Instead of buying a wireless router, you could try the following procedure. However, it is a lot more complicated, and probably will only work with certain wireless chipsets.

http://ubuntulinuxhelp.com/how-to-setup-a-wireless-ubuntu-router/

Your laptop will probably need 2 wired ethernet interfaces (not just 1) and 1 wireless interface, as described in the article.

Thanks mark, but still i have only one LAN port and one mini LAN port in my laptop. so is there any other way like bridging lan and wlan as in windows? I have just got a CAT5 cable from my isp. which they laid from a swtich somewhere nearby. That will suit only into the LAN port of my laptop.
Thanks in advance.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing

A laptop will use a LOT more power as a router than a true router. Ubuntu as a router will allow a headless torrent server / squid server / DNS server also though which can speed up the internet significantly.

Can you help with this problem?
