No network devices available 11.10

Ubuntu 11.10 Amd 64
Network manager reports No network devices available ( should find a wireless connection) BUT the wireless WORKS!
problem is NM will not let me change or see any settings.
Other people seem to have the same problem.

Could it be Gnome desktop which I installed to try to compare with Unity!
The Network manage works ok when booting from Live CD

Clicking system settings and Network gives this error
"The system network services are not compatible with this version"

I tried to install OPENSUSE 12.1 which uses the Gnome3 Desktop but I could not get the network to work at all, since the options in the NM were grayed out and I need to connect with security enabled.

 Common link seems to be Gnome

Yes I can ping that IP
I loaded WICD network tool and that allows me to configure the wireless security

If you can ping 8.8.8.8 then your system is not getting DNS servers via DHCP. If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf

Do you get web access?

I have done that and web access ok. In fact web access and updates etc all ok

Cool do the updates fix things or do you need to still run the command to get web access?

Two things
Firstly my girlfriend had an accident yesterday and is in hospital so that is more important now, having an op in 2 hrs for a replacement hip

I updated and it all went pear shaped tried to fix but the system would not come up, Flashing screen at logon with the desktop photo.
luckily I had a FSARCHIVER image so restored it today back to 11.04 which never had a problem! I will stay on 11.04 for a while
thanks but cant do anymore now so I will close this for now
