Installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a fresh PC Dell Inspiron 1000 wifi doesn;t work

Asked by Paul Ouellette

I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a PC and erased all the Windows XP files. I have only the instance of Unbuntu on the Primary Harddrive of the PC.
I have a Dlink DWLG650M wireless card that worked fine in Windows. It is not recognized in Ubuntu.
I can't seem to figure out how to check if the driver is loaded and if not how to load it.
Here is the output of the sudo commands. Please advise as I am at a loss.

It's an Atheros AR5513 chip

Looks like you need ndiswrapper + windows driver. You will need the 32bit driver as your OS is 32bit.

Hi there, i'm no expert but i had sort of same problem, couldn't get my usb wifi to work.
Somewhere i read i just needed to install the "linux-firmware-nonfree". It is very easy to install using the If you have SYNAPTIC console, that is not included by default on ubuntu 11.10 but you could install it from software centre searching for "Synaptic Package Manager". Hope it helps
