can access router but no internet

Asked by heather michel

I have the latest ubuntu release. We were watching a video on facebook yesterday evening and the internet died. (I am using my other machine now which is windows.) Anyway, my linux machine can see the router (if I open firefox and type in the 178 etc I see the router settings etc) but if I try to go to the internet I get a cannot find the server message.
Any thoughts?
It has worked up until last evening so maybe there was spyware or a bug that actually affected linux?

If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf

Then try the web, does the web work? If so, we can make it permanent..
