Network adapter not getting detected.

Asked by swamina

hi,
one of my friend is unable to connect to LAN or wireless LAN. i have checked in system->preference->network connections. in that under wired category i am unable to fine eth0 or eth1. i have given add and cross checked for my laptop mac. but under wired, in mac address its blank. hope network adapter mac had not been configured. so i just went to terminal to take my mac, so that i can give a try to config it manually. but in terminal i have given ifconfig and none of the mac is been displayed.

Is that my network device not been detected ???? i am using the same version in my system, and its working flawless. once booting the OS, i have just connected my lan cable and started downloading other packages. but in this case its not happening. pls help me in getting out of this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Swaminathan Veerapandian

Hi ,
have you considered to switch to a more recent version of Ubuntu ?

Ubuntu 10.04 will reach EOL (End Of Life) pretty soon. (this April). This it might be a good chance to upgrade your system to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (support until April 2017).

I prefer new installs. You will lose your programs (you can install them after) , but your configs and personal files will be saved. Of course for the sake of safety , it would preferred to do a backup of your personal files somewhere in an external media also.

Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (the latest LTS version) can be found here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

I'm almost certain that your WiFi will work without problems in 12.04.2 LTS. A newer version of Ubuntu means :
new software , newer Kernel (better hardware support - WiFi included) .... etc.

The only thing might be needed to install is the additional driver for WiFi. Do the step of upgrade and post back again if your problem insist or else , mark the question as solved by clicking the button "This solved my question" in the appropriate answer.

Regards
 NikTh
