repopulate icon panel 4 logout,firefox,opera,thunderbird

Asked by ken78724

unbeknowingly I disabled my system folder icon, logout icon, firefox icon, opera, open office, thunderbird icons on my desktop; I believethis happened after I started a Lucid 10.04 LTS 64 amd on my ACER laptop. The only symptom allied with this was a hyper active keyboard. It was simultaneous witha hot night, last night herein Austin texas.

I cannot find a forum discussing this or bug report giving a solution for this bug related to an aborted download, brought to a stop at the point where it says how many programs will be removed and how many Lucid will reinstall. Maybe that is where the critical repopulating program was disabled and then the hyperactive keyboard began a little more furiously than normal. Or, it could be my blood was purring too hard. regardless, I cannot figure out where to turn or even how to do an incident report.

I do have access to terminal but not to Systems files or another PC or laptop to begin a work around.

thanks a bunch

Ken

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Hello Chris:
thanks for the alert; as I just posted in a forum with a similar question,
my Mirus PC is also down. It is hard to do work arounds or to figure which
way to go without info needed. Indeed, I signed up to be a Lucid bug tracker
but too limited time to do that work and then my PC and laptop both have
been down. wishing you the best. Kenneth

Greg, Thanks for responding. No, I do not have a panel with applications
listed nor the places or System; plus right clicking comes up with the
options: Create Folder, Create Folder, Create Document, Clean up Name, a
check mark in front of Keep Aligned followed by Change Desktop Background.
Am dumbfounded. Oh yes, I can open terminal as I had set up that option in
my prior work.

Before closing, Is there a fix I could use in terminal to "reconstitute" or
reconfigure a panel with desired icons as well as Applications Places and
System and a specific Shut down icon.

Again, I appreciate your guidance.

Kenneth

Greg, terminal responded "Error while parsing options: Unknown option
-recursive-unset. Run 'gconftool - - help' to see a full list of available
command line options." I did that but don't follow as yet. Am lucky I have
my PC running. Many thanks. Will be at it. Ken

Greg. is there a risk of running .... delete current one:

   rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

Finally,reload panel:

pkill gnome-panel without the initial remedy?

Greg I skipped the 1st step and did the second two then powered off and came
back to login and have the panel repopulated w/o any risk... Am using the
laptop at the moment. Many thanks to you! Will get to work, hopefully
tracking some bugs. Kenneth

With many thanks to Greg, I was able to repopulate the panel and use my laptop to answer his email directly. Am able to work, begin tracking bugs again and I gratefully ask that my question be described as solved. without inputing the gconftool step, I was able to overcome the repopulation of the panel by simply inputing delete current one: rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel and reloading the panel with: pkill gnome-panel

it worked.. Many thanks again!
