Desktop menus missing - blank desktop

Asked by Daniel Thornhill

I restarted my desktop with Ubuntu 10.10 and it take several times at Login Screen to log in. Once logged in all I see is a blank desktop. I do not see any of the top left and bottom menu bars. I can hit Alt+F2 to bring up the missing tool bar temporarly. I have successfully logged in under safe mode and see everthing as normal but once I restart in normal operation I get the blank desktop.

As mentioned some times it take sevearl times to login in as it appears to get stuck in a loop. What could be going on in this situation. I am tyring to give Linux a try on an older machine before building a newer one to see if I could live without Microsoft Windows on the new machine.

I installed the KDE desktop and it has restarted several times like it should. Haven't really messed with loading in software while using it to see if it will have same problems.

I would like to use the Ubuntu desktop if possible.

Try changing your default display resolution. Pop up a terminal Ctrl-Alt-t and type
gksudo gnome-display-properties
Then reduce the resolution a bit to see if the toolbar shows up.

I've got a similar problem - completely blank desktop. However, I have got a toolbar and I don't have any trouble logging in I know all my files are still around and uncorrupted because I can get into Firefox and googlemail and attach one or more files to an email. But I can't get through to anything else, no Utilityprogams, etc. And I don't think Evolution is working either - it looks as though it is, but nothing is downloading - but that may be a separate problem with my provider.

This has all happened since last software update.

Can you help with this problem?
