Problem with 11.04 upgrade

Asked by John F Frasca

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 (which was working perfectly fine). After completing the download, I restarted my computer, as instructed, in order to complete the installation. After I choose and click the linux OS from the grub menu, I get the login screen and enter my user name and password. At first, it appears that all is well, but all I get is the wallpaper of my desktop...that's it; there's no taskbar, no desktop icons, no nothing! I'm quite new to linux and I spent a great deal of time getting 10.10 configured to my liking and needs (printer, scanner, etc.). Now it appears that I've lost everything. Please tell me if there's something I can do to recover, without any lose of data and programs.

Try pressing ALT+F2 and run:

nautilus -q; gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

May help

Same here; no change. I think I'm going to forget about 11.04 and reinstall 10.10. ..very frustrating.

@both of you
Do you have Nvidia card ?
I had this issue, but I'm not sure how I solved it.

Boot on 2nd line of Grub (Recover), then in menu select sanSafeFailX.
You should have a desktop with both top and bottom bars.
Install NVidia proprietary driver, activate it.
Log off and log in (only from graphic session).
Check NVidia proprietary driver is used (not only activated).
In System->Administration->Login Screen, choose "Classical without effects" instead of "Ubuntu".
In System->Administration->NVidia X Server, do apply on current configuration to force rewriting of configuration.
Then reboot normally.

Can you help with this problem?
