Menu Missing

Help, have been using Ubuntu, 10.04.3 installed initially months ago and updated when appropriate. Switched on and find that the menu options are not available, just the bar at the top of the screen. Can anyone give a novice user a solution to save the data which I must admit I have not backed up for quite a while. I am using an Acer AspireOne netbook

Try to do this:
1. Login into Ubuntu
2. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
3. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

4. Restart, this should work.

If when you hit CTRL + ALT + T and nothing happen, do this:
1. At login screen select Recovery Console at bottom:

2. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

Have tried inputting the code you suggest but am getting the following response

Error while parsing options: Unknown option -rf

Any ideas?

there is a bug with the most recent upgrade and lots of people are experiencing this problem. i'd say wait a week to see if a fix comes up then install the fix.

one person reported he was able to retore the items by forcing the older version of x-server. you might want to give this a try instead.
