panel menus do not show

Asked by pawpaw mike

I was wondering where my panel menus went. I have desktop icons but my panel menus are gone. How do I get them back? My version is 8.04. Thanks pawpaw Mike.

If you still have your panels, right click on the panel, choose "Add to panel" and select "Main Menu" from the list and then click on "Add".

Thank you for your time. That is the problem, there is nothing on top or bottom of the screen. No apps, places, clock or trash can or anything else just icons down the left side. PPM.

Right click to dekstop and choose add new panel (or add panel), can't it?

Press Alt+F2 (F2 is the second "Function" button) and type into the blank field "gnome-panel" (without the quotation marks) and press "Enter".
Into the terminal window type: sudo debconf gnome-panel
Press Enter and then reboot.

Alternatively, in the terminal type:
gconftool-2 --shutdown
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

Press Enter after each command.

I didn't realize until someone told me, it's not the main menubar but the entire desktop that is disappearing. The only other item on desktop, apart from the menu bar is a backup folder created when we upgraded to 8.10. Everything disappears.
When screensaver is switched to blank-as opposed to off- the desktop does not disappear. When the screensaver is turned back on, the desktop disappears and I have to reboot.
So, it's the desktop and it may be related to the screensaver.
Should I still try what you suggested?

In the meantime I am gonna switch the desktop to blank again.

Kind wishes,

Anthony Burman.
