Says screen saver installed but cannot find it anywhere

It was suggested to check for 'gtnome-screensaver-preferences using a terminal. I did. Nothing. So if anyone got any other suggestions on how to get the screensaver so I can choose what I want to use as a screensaver, please let me know.

The only thing that shows up there, is a screen with a padlock symbol on it. I don't want to lock the screen. No screen saver.

I don't have hardly any knowledge of commands. Is there something above that I can use?

In response to actionparsnip, I know what you advised me to run. But, on my laptop I don't have just a straight vertical line, so used the back slash instead. That gave me the above answer. Is there another way I can get the same results as using a straight vertical line?

Like I said I do not have just a vertical line on this laptop, so I use the back slash instead. I again typed in what actionparsnip suggested, but this time instead of 'uname -a', I put in 'margaretmackintosh -a' and here is what I got:

Okay I just found my vertical slash which is a Capital i, so will run the command as he has wrote it and see what I get. What happened was when I typed the Capital 'I' into the terminal, instead of being like this 'I' it had a cross bar at top and bottom and this was the results:

I see that here it printed out like what he told me to type in. But, other then it saying there was no packages found, I don't know what the above means. Any suggestions?

Try copy and paste on actionparsnip's command. I tried both commands, they returned very different answers. | on my keyboard (desktop) is Shift+\. Good luck.

Pasted the command again and did as it suggested and here is the result after it said the 'ii' program was not installed I typed in what it said to type in: sudo apt-get install ii (I seperated the text and put 4 xxxx's in front of the result of the command so you could find it easier.

Could someone tell me if I now need to do something else or do I have a screensaver now?

Can anyone tell me what I should do now or is the screensaver installed?

I just checked my Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04, and your #13 is like mine, except version number. That would make me think that the screensaver in installed. Try the command on #3 gnome-screensaver-preferences to see what happens. I have no idea about #14. Maybe others can help.

I am not sure what 'command on #3 gnome-screensaver-preferences to try. Just a dummy here. Please advise.

I again put in the command gnome-screensaver-preferences. Again it said 'command not found'. Then I just put in the command gnome-screensaver and this is what I got:

But, I still don't know how to get the screensaver up to be able to chose what I want to use as a screen-saver. So it must be installed and running, I just can't find it. There are no numbers to the right of any line in this copy of Ubuntu. Sure would be nice if the screensaver was available to use instead of hidden somewhere.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to look for the screensaver and how to get it to work so I can choose a 'saver'. Actually the terminal said it was running but it has not came on yet. Even though I have left the laptop running awhile.

What happens if you put is terminal sudo gnome-screensaver-preferences ? I just did, a slightly different screen came up. Maybe someone else can help you, I have reached the end of my knowledge. Good luck!

Well, you certainly have more knowledge then me. There is 'Screenshot'. But, isn't that just to catch pictures of things from different web sites? Still trying to find a answer. What is in that folder? Mine has, almost complete page, of screensaver descriptions. I think, if there is nothing there, or no .xscreensaver getimage.cache, you have no screensavers. Not sure why. Something may be corrupted. Please tell how you installed 11.10, Upgrade or Live CD. If a Live CD did you check MD5Sum? Yes 'screenshot' just copies whatever in on the screen.

Went to 'Home Folder', then to 'View', then to 'Show Hidden Files'. There is no 'xscreensaver getimage.cache'. There is 'cache'. Opened it but nothing in it about screensavers. So guess I don't have one.

I had Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. From the Ubuntu web site I downloaded Ubuntu11.04, then wrote to a Blank DVD and from that installed it. To download it I downloaded "Ubuntu11.04-desktop-i386.iso BitTorrent", a Alternate Download. By doing the 'BitTorrent' download, instead of taking over 16 hours to download, with '58 Peers' helping, it only took a half hour or a hour to do so. In the area I live in the Internet Service is slow to very slow at times. Then installed from the DVD. Since this time whenever the 'Update Manager' came up with files to "Update", I updated the files. At one point had to 'Restart' the laptop, so that must of been when I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10, as I actually thought I still had 'Ubuntu 11.04"... Also that is when I quit having a screensaver, even though the Synaptic Package Manager shows that a screensaver is installed. That's the only place a screensaver is mentioned. Not in my 'system settings' or anywhere else as far as I can tell. Then when I am in the Package Manager there are 2 choices to get packages, I forget what they are but never quite sure which one I should use.

One thing I did like about using the 'BitTorrent download' is that I did not lose anything in changing systems, as after it finished the download it uploaded all my previous files. I had saved my husbands and my home folders on a Blank DVD, but as it turned out I didn't need to. Even my mail client Mozzila Thunderbird was uploaded with all addresses and connections.

In the Synaptic Package Manager there are several different screensaver packages available, but I don't know which one I should use. There are 3 or 4 screeensaver packages that it says are already installed. But, like I said I cannot find them anywhere else. Any other suggestions. I really do appreciate all the help, even though it has turned out that I probably don't have a screensaver installed.

Hi again,

I just did a 'File Search' for 'screensaver'. Boy, got a whole long list of Highlighter and ones that weren't highlighted screensavers. I click on one that read 'gnome-screensaver-dialog' Folder: /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver 60.1kg executable, Day was Monday. What I got was a box that read inside "Could not open document gnome-screensaver-dialog, There is no installed viewer capable of displaying the document". So what viewer do I need to install that would be capable of displaying the document?

Well, I just read quite a lot of the results I emailed you regarding your second link. To most people it is probably understandable. But to me, it is like a new language, I don't know what it is talking about. Think I understand a little then it completely confuses me. Today I have gone the first link two times. It worked. Why it did not open, for you, I have no clue. I also tried copy and paste the link to my home page. It also worked. Another way to get to site is: Google "web upd8" Then click on: "Things To Tweak After Installing Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot ~ Web ..."
If you get there, scroll down to "No screensaver in Gnome 3.2". Go on down and follow instructions to install "xsceensaver" or "gnome screensaver" I use gnome, but either will work. Also note, if it gives a problem, you may have to uninstall one or both screensavers, and reinstall. All instructions are there. On down, probably be good to "Install Synaptic"
On second link, a list of questions. Read questions. If you think any apply to this problem, scroll down for answer.
Sometimes I get a little down, about Ubuntu's problems, like this. I have a friend, with two teenagers, three computers. They have Windows, hundreds of virus and malware, that I help them with. Makes me like Ubuntu. It is like a new language, Keep digging!

I did as you suggested. I Googled "web upd8", got a bunch of stuff. Bookmarked it for future reference. I then clicked 'Things To Tweak After Installing Ubuntu 11.10 etc..' I scrolled down to No screensaver in Gnome 3.2".. In a terminal I put in what it said and here is what I got:

I then type in a terminal: sudo rm /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command, pressed Enter and the first line came up in following. Then typed in sudo apt-get install gnome-screensaver , after the first line the rest is from this command.

Only thing that reads different is "gnome-screensaver is already the newest version". To me that means that it must be installed, am I assuming correctly?

Also tried to install Synaptic, this is what I got:

I do have 'Synaptic Package Manager' installed. That is what I said in one of my earlier info's that it says I do have screensavers. I just cannot open or locate them.

My son got me this laptop for Christmas several years ago, it is a LinuxCertified. Of course with Linux. He doesn't want his mother to have to deal with Windows, etc....

What to do now? More reading. Will try uninstalling the installed Screensaver and then reinstall the gnome version I think and if that still does not work maybe install the xscreensaver.

Hi Michael,

In the Synaptic Package Manager:
I did as you suggested and uninstalled all screen-saver packages that was installed. I then MARKED all GNOME screensaver packages for install and installed them but still could not get the screensaver to be shown as installed.

Then I marked most of the xscreensaver packages to be installed and when I clicked 'Apply', I got a box that said 'gnome screensaver would need be be uninstalled'. So I removed all those packages and installed xscreensaver packages. By doing this I now have a Screensaver. But, in order to get it to work I had to add a couple more xscreensaver packages that I wasn't sure about. But, now it does show a 'Screensaver' in the Installed packages on the Dashboard, where I can get at it.

So, I thank you very very much for all your help and advice. This did the trick. Thanks again.

#32 is the answer that helped solve my problem but there is no 'This Solved My Problem' button at the bottom. So sending this instead.

Hi Michael,

The screensaver question was solved. I just used this link to ask a question on Lauchpad since I was unable to open it online due to some bug or other. Also cannot log into Ubuntu One, keeps saying there is a problem. Wanted to use it to back up my files but cannot even logon.
