HOW TO INSTALL GNOME3 IN UBUNTU 11.04

Asked by !ncredible

I am trying to install gnome3 in ubuntu 11.04. but whenever i try to install it from ubuntu software center, it gives me the error

"Package dependencies cannot be resolved

This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.

details:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

gnome3-session: Depends: gnome-shell but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-session-bin (>= 2.32.1-0ubuntu20) but 2.32.1-0ubuntu20 is to be installed
Depends: gnome-session-common (= 2.32.1-0ubuntu20) but 2.32.1-0ubuntu20 is to be installed"

 what should i do?

Gnome 3 is not currently supported on Ubuntu. A PPA for natty is available at https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 but these packages are EXPERIMENTAL and UNSTABLE, will break Unity and possibly other parts of your system, and cannot be downgraded safely.

Did you add that PPA?

so Rohith, i have installed Gnome3 on my laptop as suggested by the link provided by you... and its working.
but, there is a problem that is there is not any MAXIMIZATION or MINIMIZATION buttons on the tittle bar of any window i open...i wonder how to and where to minimize the windows i run or how to run multiple windows at same time.

also, there is not any "right click menu" means it do nothing when i press right button of the mouse, no themes etc.

Trust me Ubuntu still is under work to support Gnome 3. Since even UBUNTU 11.04 Unity got still some issues. Even I face sometimes issues missing the Maximize and Minimize button. I do restart and it get backs. I tried to install UBUNTU 11.04 but it doesn't work for me. Unity and the graphics look so scratched. So I doubt it support or some bug with the support drivers which makes Gnome3 to work. However try to check is the same issue when you change it to basic version when you log on.. Like when you restart with password, you may find the a which session you need like Gnome 3 or it gives options. Try to log with other basic version. If it works with the button coming back, than its simple to understand that your drivers and the software which supports GNOME 3 is yet to match. So wait for some time.

Can you help with this problem?
