Devin, you can instantly remove windows by using the Ubuntu LiveCD/LiveUSB. (you can also use the Gparted live CD/Live USB, available from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php )

When the Live system is booted, you can go to 'System > Administration > Gparted Partition Editor'.
This allows you to erase Windows and then resize Ubuntu to fill the whole drive.
Information on how to do this is available in the Gparted Help Menu, or pressing F1 when Gparted is open -(Chapters 5.2 and 5.3 of the help manual).

Hope this works!

NOTE: Resizing partitions can sometimes cause data loss.

@ric: What does this question have to do with a bug report from over three years ago regarding the removal of the esound package for gstreamer from the default Ubuntu desktop system???

easiest way to remove windoze is to "use entire disk" when asked how you want to install ubuntu.

make sure you copy any files you want to keep before you remove windoze.

Then try System > Administration > Disk Utility.

Please note that Gparted makes a list of things to do - you have to
apply the changes to your disk by clicking on the green tick on the
toolbar

If you want to delete all on disk before using whole disk for Ubuntu, you can remove in this order:
1-all logical partition (which one in extended partition)
2-all primary partitions (including extended partition)

I'm going to remove this bug link as it seems to have nothing to do with the question, and was fixed for hardy (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS)

@Devin: While attempting to use GParted, when do you see the "permission denied" message? What step, specifically, are you trying to perform when you get that error? It it usually very simple to fix "permission denied" problems. (Also, if you can explain your difficulties with Disk Utility, it might be possible to help you with that.)

That's because Windows reports partitions as different 'drives' (not 'hard drives'). Also, it is limited in the filesystems it can read, so it ignores any that are not recognized (like linux-swap and Ubuntu ext*). Ordinarily, a Windows install comes on one partition (the Windows 'C:' drive). However as you have two, and assuming that you want to keep the one that is not your Windows install itself, I would suggest that you discover which one is the Windows install, and just delete that. If you want rid of both, though, just delete the two NTFS (I assume NTFS as the file system, if not, it will be FAT32)

Can I also ask, what is 'method B'

i did locate which one had windows one it but it wont let me delete it, it says that "the drive is busy at the moment" and method B is the GParted install thing in the link you gave me in your first comment. there are 3 different methods they give you and method B seemed the safest

You need to make sure that all windows that have the drive open are closed. Then in Gparted, you need to right click on the drive name, and click 'unmount'.

Please note that it is advisable to have shut down Windows properly before you carry out the operation.

Are you using Gparted on the liveCD/USB. You MUST use it on the live cd/usb.

Using it from the installed Ubuntu will damage your hard drive file systems.
The Gparted application is pre-installed on the live environment (but not on any installations).
It can be found, in the LiveCD Session at System > Administration > Gparted Partition Editor.
