Using GTPARTED to resize the root directory

Asked by Marcus

I just discovered that my root directory is full. I have room on my /home/ directory that I can use to increase the size of the / directory but can GTPARTED do this? I understand that you must unmount the partition before resizing but can you unmount the root directory? Or would it be better to use the gtparted live cd to resize both the root & /home/ partitition.

The full directory is probably the cause of the Synaptic Package Manager not working & might have contributed to the corrupt writer document (other appeals for help in this forum.

If anyone has resized their root directory either with gtparted or using the gtparted live CD and has any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

marcus

Yes. the gtparted CD will sort this out for you easily.
I keep a small (256Mb) Flash key with this mini distro on it for just such occasions.

Alternatively, an Ubuntu live CD will also suffice.
(You may need to install "parted" once you have booted with the Ubuntu live CD)

sudo apt-get install parted

Marcus I have successfully increased my root directory.
here is a bug that when you install Ubuntu it doesn't give you enough
swap disk space 344Mb. So when you do updates it tells you the root is
not big enough. If you run the installation cd and do a new install the
partioning install program won't help you.

This is what you have to do to fix it.
Run a live session of Ubuntu from the install cd
Under system administration you will find a partion editor
Run this.
You will notice that the partion to the right of your Swap drive is in
the way!
Decrease this partion and move it to the right.
This will give you space to increase the swap drive partion.
You now may want to shift the swap drive to the right to give EXT3 drive
some more room as well depending on how big your hard drive is.
Increase the swap drive (you will need to click on the key icon and turn
off the swap),I increased it to 1.5 gig or 1500 Mb
I increased EXT3 drive to about 40 gig it had 32.65 gig used on it.
Now click on apply changes
When it finishes - shut down and when it prompts you -take out CD and
then press enter.
This will take a long time also - 4 hours
Run update under system - administration - update manager

Mine is now loading the updates
