update now crash, can't start, i see gnu grub screen, no options

Asked by doromage@hotmail.com

I had my computer on for 2 days and while i was working, the update screen came up so I confirmed...it said i had to reboot but I decided to wait until I had finished working.
When I had finally finished my work I decided that my computer needed a rest (I forgot to backup my 2 days work I had done before doing this!), so I turned off the computer.
I have both windows and ubuntu and have had ubuntu for about 3 weeks and everything has been fine.
Anyway, this morning when I chose Ubuntu there seems to be some error but I can't see what because the screen changes too quickly.
Then I see this screen Gnu Grub version 1.97 beta 4
(I read another problem in which a girl had various options. I only have a command line (sth. like GNU:>) and i can only choose
reboot, help, and some other things.

Since I am new to Ubuntu, I don't know how serious this problem....and if someone could please help me get to my file I've been working on for 2 days I would be eternally gratefull. (From windows I can't seem to get in to my ubuntu files....it actually seems like there is nothing there anymore!)

hi im not the greatest at this but lets get some simple things started

at the command promt are you able to type or enter a statement

for example

apt-get moo #### you can use that statement as a rest it will not hurt your system

if that works let us know and someone will try to help you further

to clarify are you stuck in the grub menu or do you have a option at login a small box that can expand to give you options such as failsafe session, terminal session, gnome session?
