HP Deskjet 2050 J510 Scanner don't work

Asked by Carlos Martín Izquierdo

I installed the printer HP Deskjet 2050 J510 and works fine but only the printer! the scanner is NOT working. Is is possible scanning will be supported in the future? This printer is only just now supported in the 3.10.9 version of HPLIP. Any help?
Im using ubuntu 10.10 version and manual installation of HPLIP 3.1

Looks like the scanner is not currently supported in Linux

This problem has been solved by an update to Hewlett-Packard's installer program HPLIP 3.11.5 Public Release. See for a download, http://sourceforge.net/news/?group_id=149981

I have the same problem. My daughter, however, has the same printer but possibly a later model, which DOES scan. I've read the above posts and looks like I have to download the current HPlip, but could someone please tell me how to install a targz file???? I'm not a newbie and have installed Debian files okay, but have't had occasion until now to install a targz. Please advise?
Thank you.

You want the .run file. Mark it as executable and run it in terminal as your username (without sudo)

Thanks, actionparsnip. Have downloaded the .run file and proceeded
    as per instructions @
    http://howtoubuntu.org/how-to-execute-a-run-or-bin-file-in-ubuntu#.Ubu3yecW3Zi

But when I try to execute .run I get the following Terminal message:

    wordsmyth@wordsmyth-Inspiron-1545:~$ chmod +x file-name.run.
chmod: cannot access `file-name.run.': No such file or directory
    wordsmyth@wordsmyth-Inspiron-1545:~$ sudo ./file-name.run
    [sudo] password for wordsmyth:
    sudo: ./file-name.run: command not found
    wordsmyth@wordsmyth-Inspiron-1545:~$

    So still puzzled. :-( Wordsmyth

Forgot to mention: When I double-click on the .run file as
directed, I get a list of files in the folder and no way to click
RUN IN TERMINAL. Is this my problem? Has something not worked? I'm
not too familiar with zip files etc, but I DID do EXTRACT FILES ....

LATER: Fixed - muddled my way through and now scanning! Clicked on
FOLDER and then tried INSTALL file - worked like a charm. Thanks for
your time, as always. Next time I'll muddle my way through before
trying Launchpad. Cheers and cheerio, Wordsmyth :-)
