In the terminal

2. gconftool-2 — – shutdown (no space between the dashes and no space between the dash and the word ‘shutdown’)

3. rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

4. pkill gnome-panel – That’s it!

Finally found time to try Greg's solution but it doesn't work for me.
Maybe i got a wrong version of the applet. indicator shows version 0.4.6. and the file path is "/usr/lib/indicator-applet/indicator-applet".

dt 01 this is odd three people with the same problem . right now the only thing i know to ask is, HOW HUGE IS THIS SPACE ? between the speaker and the envelope it is locked in the system . the internet icon can be unlocked and moved . the spacer bar can be unlocked and moved or removed . it you have a unity install on a laptop the panel is locked and still in testing ,

The space between the icons is from the size of one icon to one and a half.
Sometimes on desktop startup the network notification icon is missing but tomboy, speaker and mail(envelope icon) are there.
then i have to log back in or restart the applet.

this use to happen to me , but i found a way to fix it .
first go to applications = software center = on the left side click installed software .
in the list look for compiz and remove it then restart .
after restart go back to software center , at the top right corner type compiz .
then select compiz fusion icon and install then compiz and install . restart .
now go to applications = system tools = compiz fusion icon click , it will show up by the network icon . right click it and then select the select windows manager then select metacity . this should fix your trouble .

reinstalling compiz didn't help with the missing or overlapping icons on startup.

this is actually a known bug (with a proposed patch/hack inside): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-applet/+bug/589666

Can you help with this problem?
