Add microphone mute icon to panel

Is there a way to add a microphone icon to the panel, so that I may mute the global audio input with one-click?

You can set shortcut keys in Compiz. You can run ccsm and set commands there, then set how the cmmand is triggered (hot corner or sortcut key). You can even make a script and use easystroke and make it run the script with a gesture.
