k3b rips DVD's but NOT audio CD's

Asked by J. E. Pendergrass

Hello all,

Although K3B is able to recognize and pull up freebd/cddb info. on any audio CD I've tried, I cannot get it to rip any audio CD. This is all the more puzzling because I have no problems erasing rewritables or ripping/burning DVD. Trying the CD's in either of my two optical drives yields the same non-result.

Am I missing some required library for the ripping of CDDA, or can any of you suggest a possible solution?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Jim

What happens when you try to rip audio? What message does it give?
Try running k3b in a terminal to see if there are additional messages,

Attempting to rip an audio CD simply pulls up the identity of that CD as known by FreeDb/CDDB. Clicking "Ok to accept that entry does dismiss that dialog, but NOTHING else happens whatsoever.

Since originally filing this, I've additionally discovered that K3B won't verify the data of a video DVD or a data CD. An attempt to verify a video DVD simply freezes the program, and attempting to verify a data CD invokes the KDE crash handler.

Below is the terminal output; if you see anything in it that may help, I'll really appreciate knowing:

I have a similar problem on my Dell Latitude D600 running gutsy.
When I start k3b with a CD in the drive, k3b says "found invalid bcd values. No bcd toc." (see below). I investigated the matter a little bit and found:

- It happens with old and new CDs, even with those I ripped two weeks ago with k3b!
- k3b's CD copy function is nevertheless able to read the tracks with high speed and store them as wav files.
- The problem is not kernel related since k3b worked fine after the upgrade to gutsy and the problem persists when I boot a feisty kernel.
- grip works fine but slow (at most 5x reading speed).
- The amarok CD player works fine.
- I have two pluggable drives (a DVD-RW drive and a DVD-ROM drive) and I have the problem with both of them.

So either there is hardware problem or there was an update between the release of gutsy and now that broke
k3b.

Here is the output for the DVD-ROM drive:

Although I'd seen this in Gutsy, I don't recall having seen it in Hardy, and I just now tested for it in Intrepid with no problem, though I'll admit that I now only use K3B to rip DVD, as I've found I prefer Asunder for ripping CD.
