Subtitle detection

I met difficulties displaying subtitles while playing a video. The subtitle file is either a .srt or a .sub in the same directory and having the same name of the video file.
When I launch the video, Kaffeine doesn't display subtitles. In Player -> Subtitle, I have the "off" choice selected and an empty choice (those two choices are available whether a subtitle file is available or not).
While playing the video (and only while playing it), if I open the subtitle file with File -> Open, it sometimes works (always for the same files, but I didn't find out why for some files it works, and why for other it doesn't)
Do you know a simpler and more reliable way to load subtitles?

Unfortunatly, the only proposed solutions are to use MPlayer or Kplayer. Should I conclude that there is no known reliable way to load subtitles in Kaffeine?

"9. Can i play my avi files with a external subtitle file?
Yes. Subtitle files with sub, smi, srt, asc, ssa or txt extensions will be autoloaded. Use the playlist context-menu to add files manually. During playback you can change the used file in the Player|Subtitles-menu."

Great, the playlist context menu enables to load a subtitle file and to associate it with the video file!
This is an acceptable workaround as the autoload of the subtitles still doesn't work.
