changing password

I am running Kubuntu 8.01 with KDE 3.5.9 I changed my password in user management and made a log off. But the screen just went black, no log-on menu appeared. I made a hard restart and when the log-on menu appeared I could not log in with the new password. I chosed the terminal login instead of X-windows and here I was able to login with the new password.
I closed X-windows and made another password change, made a reboot but still I was unable to login when the log-on menu appeared. But through terminal and "startx" I can log me in. Where is the problem.

Control-question; if you type the password in the username field ... does it look the same in the terminal as in the kdm-login screen?

I'm thinking that this may be a keyboard-layout related problem.

Does the password contain any 'special' characters? (consider everything outside the range of a-z, A-Z and 0-9 special when answering this question)

If yes; Does it help if you change your password to a simpler one?

Btw; When it says that you can't log in --- does it give you an error message hinting that your credentials are wrong, or does something else happen?

The password looks OK in the username field and there are no special characters in it. The error message just indicates that the password is wrong. My idea was something like KDE/X-windows was using another password than Linux konsol, but I cannot see why that should be the case.
