Can not login after Kubuntu auto-update

This system was working at Kubuntu 9.04 and was upgraded to 9.10 days ago and was working fine. The system is set for auto-updates. Today, after an auto-update, a message requested a reboot. After the reboot, I can not log in. I did not forget my password, it simply does not accept it.

Hi RogerB

There is a way to reset your password using the recovery mode. It is not complicated, but there are several steps. There is a good comprehensive tutorial at:

Thank you Fabio M. P. Bugnon,

I reset the password and was able to log in. However, I received the following error message: "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails, the error code is 3. Check your installation". The system does not start.

Just a reminder, this situation occurred after an auto-update.

Hi Roger,

As I use Ubuntu, I'm not aware of any Kubuntu bugs related to this upgrade problem, but you can search Lauchpad or Ubuntu Forum to see if there is something going on.

I think however it is worth to try the auto-recovery mode to see if it can help you, specially the option "Dpkg - try to repair broken packages." (or something like this).

To do this, start/reboot your computer. Bios will load and Grub should follow, letting you choose between your Kubuntu installation and other OSs you might have in your computer. Simply chose the recovery mode at Grub (usually the second line). If you don't see Grub at the very beginning of your boot process (meaning it is hidden), you can use the ESC key right after BIOS finish loading to visualize Grub.

Then choose the option DPKG - try to fix broken packages.

Fabio,

Thank you once again for your reply and suggestions. I reinstalled Kubuntu 9.04 (back one level) to fix this. This isn't a business-need computer, just a hobby, so no harm done.

If I find myself in a similar situation, I'll try your suggestion. I've made note of it.
