Why is language-pack-es needed for locale support?

Asked by Alberto Bertogli

I needed support for es_AR.UTF-8 locale, and I had to install the whole
language-pack-es, which includes several megabytes of .mo files.

I don't want translations, I just want locale support. Shouldn't they be
in separate packages? Maybe locale support belongs to language-pack-es-base?

Or am I missing something?

Thanks,
    Alberto

PS: Is there a mailing list I should/could be using instead of this? I'd prefer an
email-based interface.

That's not what I meant. I was talking about a mailing list to discuss
the language pack stuff. I guess I'll better post this question to one
of the developer's mailing lists.

Thanks,

Well,
the question was about mailing list and the link provides that.

If you just want the locale, there's no need for a package for that; you can simply run 'sudo locale-gen es_AR.UTF-8'.

(I'll reject your post to ubuntu-devel, because this type of question is not appropriate there, and I think this should be an adequate answer.)

(Also, if you want a mailing list, it's <email address hidden>.)

This was the answer I was looking for =)

It is, thanks. Next time I'll just use the users mailing list as you
suggested, because this "answers" thing is not so nice.

Thanks a lot,
