Unable to log in on startup

Asked by Hilary Deakin

I am sending this from my wife's account. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.

Last evening I had to close down with using a power down as the OS would not close properly. This morning I tried to log on under my own account. When I tried to type the password in the password field did not accept characters and the log on screen froze.

I restarted and logged into my wife's account successfully but when I tried to change to my account from my wife's it failed again just as before.

I am the administrator for the system. Can anyone help me to log back into my account?

regards,
John

You could try and log on as your user using a terminal window, this will give you (and us) extra information about what error occurs.

Start a terminal window and type the following command:

su yourusername

make sure to replace 'yourusername' with your username. The command 'su' should ask for your password. If everything goes ok you should be logged in as your user.
Should an error appear please comment back with it here, this will enable us to help you fix this.

Thank you Michael,

I have played around logging out of my wife's account and closing down and opening up and finally it appears to be working OK, but thanks for your help.
