Ubuntu 11.10 crashes when launching certain applications

Asked by cabanas

Hi there,

I wonder why is it that ubuntu 11.10 crashes everytime i try to launch: Oracle VM virtualbox, DraftSight and Skype for 64bits?

Lately the list of apps i can't use is slowly growing for me in Ubuntu Ocelot.

Unfortunately i can't produce a bug report.

See if anyone else got same problem. Tha!!

Sorry, i just found that Synkron from this package "https://launchpad.net/~sportman1280/+archive/ppa/+files/synkron_1.5.0-0ubuntu3-intrepid3_amd64.deb" also makes system to crash.

You have installed 32bit skype on 64bit OS. You can install the 64bit deb from the skype website.

You will need to uninstall the current version first.

That is what i had done, anyway i uninstalled it, and installed it again downloading a fresh copy. I keeps on crashing.
I am copying for you again the result of
uname -a; lsb_release -a; dpkg -l | egrep -i 'skype|virtual'

I can see myself it still says 'skype:i386', although i downloaded the deb for 10.04 amd64 from skype website.

Anything i can do?
Thanks again.

sudo dpkg -P skype:i386 ;sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

Go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/ and get the 64bit deb and install it.

It seems it is the right version now, but still crasing.
Anyway i can live without skype but not without Virtualbox in order to run AutoCAD, or without DraftSight in order to avoid using a virtual Windows on Ubuntu, any help on those ones?

Virtualbox was running perfectly until some day there i got an automatic kernel update and it began to fail.
So i have a complete virtualdisk full of work and software that i can access sometimes. To keep on working i found DraftSight as an alternative CAD software for ubuntu, but it makes the OS to crash on launch.

No, skype still makes OS to crash.

If you create a new user then launch skype, is it ok?

Will it help to fix Virtualbox and DraftSight that is much more important at this point?
Not up for creating a new user and setting up again a whole set of software plus moving my working files.

Thanks mate, don't worry. Let's see if i can get some other kind of help.

I uninstalled completly from Synaptic console Skype and DraftSight, and after restart I installed fresh correct version following spaciall indications for 64 bits for DraftSight. And they both work correctly.
