System goes only into terminal mode after installing Lubuntu

Asked by Max Bosetti

After installing Lubuntu 11.10 everything proceeds Ok but ends up in terminal mode offering me a chance to enter commands. All text on the screen, No color, no graphics.
It suggests that it couldn't find a graphics engine. I am using whatever is in the motherbd for graphics. No special graphics adapter.

dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop to see which desktop component installed.

and please provide output of

Sorry, since asking the question I was finally able to get Lubuntu installed but the installation took up almost all of the 12 GB hard drive. Now it boots but can't open the OS. I suspect the machine is just too old and underpowered.
Thank you for offering your suggestions. I do appreciate it.

Can you help with this problem?
