Yes, then once it's installed to the drive you can run:

sudo apt-get upgrade

Then get a minimum LXDE session. Is this what you need?

My question strictly relates to installing mini ISO to the thumb drive, which I gather by your reply, is possible, but by what method?

The burner is non-functional, so I have tried unetbootin to write the mini ISO directly to a 4gb thumb drive, which is non-functional, out of the box. Is it necessary to alter the files/folders that were written to the thumb drive? I will need a terminal CLI prompt on the drive to do what you suggested, which does not exist.

Following the MinimalInstall guide for CLI 12.04 Install for Lubuntu core, all it says, use:

sudo -i
apt-get install lubuntu-core
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get autoclean
rm /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
reboot

Please confirm and enlighten how mini ISO gets installed to the thumb drive?
Then I could verify the code you suggested works.

You can install to a usb flash drive. It is a file system just like a traditional internal storage. Grub doesn't care about how the storage is connected unlike Windows.

You will need a separate install CD or USB as well as the destination device to install to.

Why use 'sudo -i' followed by commands needing sudo? Once you authenticate you will be in a grace period where you will not need to type your password for sudo. Seems a little weird.

You will need to use manual partitioning and set the USB storage as the destination as well as mark the partitions as / and swap etc. Be careful where you tell the installer to put Grub

12.04 Precise Pangolin mini ISO would NOT install, due to the repository NOT responding.

Therefore, tried 13.10 Saucy Salamander mini ISO, which did handshake w/mirror!

The assignments made to /dev are weird! Installer said the destination USB device was /sda, which normally is the internal Hard Drive, which I don't want to mess with. It also reported the Installer USB as /sdb and the Hard Drive as /sdc. This is completely backwards from what I am use to!

I simply had to bypass Grub installation, due to this confusion.
Q1: Can Grub be installed offline?

Q2: How can Grub be safely installed with this scenario?

Q3: Why does the mirror fail w/Precise Pangolin?

You can install Grub to the MBR using a chroot from the liveCD desktop. Great guide.

Not sure why the Precise repos would not respond. Maybe there were issues onsite but Precise is fully supported for a long time to come.

As you have installed Saucy, you can upgrade to Trusty in April if you desire. Tusty is LTS and supported for 5 years.

You have questioned my commands to install the Lubuntu part to it:

I should think these commands will get a barebones desktop, so I can go online with wifi, and eliminate the hard-wired ethernet connection.

Adding the Lubuntu part to the functional base system is NON-functional!

apt-get is unable to locate ANY of these installations:

Expert Install, UK_archive.ubuntu.com, linux-image-13.11.0-12-generic Kernel
 was what I had to use inorder to install the 13.10 Saucy Salamander 32-bit
 mini ISO Base System and GRUB boot loader on the thumb drive.

Configure the Package Manager/Select and Install Software has ERRORS,
so it was bypassed.

"E: Unable to locate package lubuntu-desktop" indicates that the package management system is missing the information from where to download the package. That information should be contained in the /etc/apt/sources.list configuration file
As far as I know, lubuntu-desktop is in the universe repository, so you would need at least main and universe repositories enables

What is the output of
cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Are there lines like
deb http://...servername.../ubuntu saucy ... main ...
deb http://...servername.../ubuntu saucy ... universe ...
(Might be combined in one line ... main universe ...)

Remark: I have never tried installing from a mini.iso, and I lack the information where the initial values for /etc/apt/sources.list are set. So I can only help curing your problem, but to not know how to prevent re-occurence for someone else.

I just did a CLI sudo tasksel and launched the Lubuntu Minimum Install Package, that provides a desktop, BUT no icons!

A top screen taskbar initially appears, BUT vanishes once I am authenticated! What can be done to generate the needed icons?

A: You can try pressing ctr-alt-t. If a command line terminal opens, you can issue the command "sudo shutdown -P now" or similar to perform a clean poweroff (or issue any other command in that terminal window).
You an try pressing ctrl-alt-del and you should get a pop-up asking whether you want to log off.
You can do a short press on the power button of the computer and you should get a pop-up asking whether you want to power off.

If none of these work, you still could do the REISUB key combination to at least force that the disks are synced before forcing poweroff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

There have been several forks outlined in the Lubuntu MinimalInstall process to install Lubuntu mini ISO:
1) apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

2) apt-get install lubuntu-core

3) Boot CPU from mini ISO thumb drive and type 'cli' (command line install). Follow instructions from text installer.
  After Base System is installed, log in and type 'sudo tasksel' then select 'lubuntu minimum installation' and click OK.

Since #1, #2 failed, #3 is my last resort.

My suggestion to the Lubuntu MinimalInstall Team is to merge ALL forks into just one that is functional.

Did these steps fail with an error message, or did they successfully complete without error, but just not provide the desired results?
