Timeline for new mapserver version?

2019-05-15 - MapServer 7.4.0 is release

I have been looking forward to this release and its SWIG integration with PHP 7 for mapserver/mapscript.

I was wondering, if there is an expected time frame for when the new version will be available via this repo?

Ubuntu is no rolling release. This means that package versions usually are not updated to higher versions than the one initially provided with a certain Ubuntu release.
Newer package versions are provided only with newer Ubuntu releases.

Ubuntu is taking over packages from Debian (usually "sid" or "buster") to avoid double packaging work, and I can see that Debian just has published MapServer 7.4.0 in its "experimental" release.

My guess is that the sequence of development steps for MapServer in Ubuntu will have to be the following:
- MapServer 7.4.0 is published for Debian sid and/or buster
- Ubuntu will take over that version into its "release in development" (currently eoan).
- A backport to older Ubuntu releases (e.g. xenial, bionic, disco) is done only upon specific request, and only done if the changes and bug fixes justify such action.

If you want to have this version now, then you probably have to compile that software package yourself.
