sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jon-severinsson/mesa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install mesa

Just an FYI, Lucid desktop is EOL in April 2013. You may want to think about upgrading soon.

You will find a PPA there somewhere. I wouldn'tpersonally bother and just install Precise or Quantal and you'll more than likely get it by default

Thank you for your time. I like the desktop config. on Lucid. If I upgrade is there a way to keep this desktop?

You can install gnome-panel and use that as the shell instead of Unity. Or you can install Xubuntu and get the 2 panel desktop you are familiar with. There are unspported forks of Gnome2 compiled with Gnome3 but they have limited support which is outside the official Ubuntu channels (Mate desktop, Cinnamon etc).
