Text-to-speech on Ubuntu 8.10?

Asked by bojo42

Hi there,
i'd like to know what package installations or configurations or have to do, to get text-to-speech working on a default installation of Ubuntu 8.10. So far it seems that Mumble relies on speech-dispatcher, but that setup isn't working (probably due to PulseAudio). For the version, i'm using the 1.1.8 from the PPA.

Many thanks in advance, as i can't wait to hear when people come into my channel ;)

I believe that Festival (possibly together with other complements kind of Mbrola/CMU/HTS) could be what you're looking for.

I'd suggest you to read the following thread in ubuntuforums:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the hints, but i installed festival before and i didn't help as mumble seems to call speech-dispatcher. i also found no option to change the TTS engine and so i get "TextToSpeech: Failed to contact speech dispatcher." when starting mumble in a terminal.

But i figured out whats up with speech dispatcher: you have to edit "/etc/default/speech-dispatcher" and change "RUN_SPEECHD=no" to "yes". Then you run "sudo /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher start" and mumble is willing to speak with you.

The reason why speech dispatcher is disabled is because it blocks pulse from accessing the sound card, so when following the stuff mentioned above you will loose any other sound capabilities.

So we still need a working solution for TTS with Mumble for Ubuntu 8.10 and probably also for Jaunty.

I am also having the same problem. I am getting no text-to-speech at all in mumble even though I have speech-dispatcher running and Festival installed on 8.10.

Can you help with this problem?
