Is there any more information you can give us? Its hard to work off something like this with that little of info. Does it seem to be that the computer lags when opening a program, can it open another program easily while the specific document is open?

Please provide which session you're running, Unity, Unity-2d, Gnome-classic (fallback)?
If possible open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Update the system:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install
Please post output of:
/usr/lib/
If it isn't possible to open a terminal switch to virtual console (text mode only): ctrl+alt+f1
login with username and password and update from there.
When finished reboot:
sudo reboot

Are you sure the file you are trying to open is secured? It is possible a virus could cause your OS to fail.
If you are still having trouble trying to get the document opened, try reinstalling your entire OS. I would move (if possible) all of your personal data to an external storage, or if needed, a side by partion on your hardrive.
To do this simply open terminal if possible, (or virtual console), and type the following:
sudo apt-get install gparted -y
(wait for process to finish)
gparted
Now shrink your partion (sda1 or whichever one says UBUNTU) so there is at lease 3 gigs free, unless your personal data takes even more space, now create a partion that fills up the space and format it as NTFS or FAT32 or FAT. (you can also create a name called backup or something)
Simply then go to your home folder, then click and drag all files to the partion, (may take a while to copy).
Then if possible on another computer, download, burn, and create an iso disk for ubuntu, then reinstall, just when you get to installing, make sure to click advanced and place it over your old ubuntu, NOT THE BACKUP!!!
Remember this is only if all else failed, so don't go straight to this right at first.

Try:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
and reboot.
Then also note which session you're logged in.
Which file type is it, text, image?
Does filemanager Nautilus open at all?
Investigate via terminal.
Run Nautilus, open the preferred file and post terminal output:
nautilus
Or to open a text file:
gedit <name_of_file>
libreoffice:
libreoffice -o <name_of_file>
pdf:
evince <name_of_file>
image:
eog <name_of_file>
Rename mimeapps.list and logout-in.
mv ~/.local/

Open the file with nano, enter in a terminal:

Then change the content of the file as suggested in comment #41.
When finished save the file: ctrl+o and exit: ctrl+x

> I dont know if Nautilus opens properly
You can open Nautilus from the launcher on the left side of the desktop, it's the first one below the ubuntu-button.
Or try to open Nautilus in a terminal:
nautilus
Regarding the file, lets say the name of the file you'd like to open is 'myfile.odt' or whatever extension or it can have no extension at all since it's recognized by the appropiate application anyway.
Please enter the path to the file in a terminal like this example and post the output:
stat /home/roger/

Obviously user misconfiguration, but actually not sure where to begin with reset.
Can you try to remember which changes you've made?
Maybe copy mimeapps.list from guest-account to user account.

As far as I know Sam I have made no changes to the system I have been trying out UBUNTU ONE AND THATS THE ONLY THING THAT I have playing with.
My only thought is that I was using Open Office which has now changed to libreoffice could that change be to blame.
Every time I upgrade I have experienced problems and have asked for help when problems occur.??

Standard file association obviously ok in guest-account but not in user account, so worth it to copy the file from guest to user account.
If uncertain login to guest-account or your test-user account and paste it's content here.
Please also post output of:
dpkg -l openoffice* | grep ii
Thanks.

Apply this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org
sudo apt-get autoremove
Then logout-in and test if the file flowers2011file.odt now opens properly in your regular account.
To copy mimeapps.list from guest to user simply open the file for example with gedit and paste the content here.
To open the file via terminal:
gedit ~/.local/

Please open the file mimeapps.list via terminal:
gedit /home/roger/
Clear the file.
Copy and paste the content exactly as displayed from there:
http://
Save the file and close it.
Open your file flowers2011.odt via terminal:
libreoffice -o /home/roger/
## Assumed the file is still in the Documents folder.
The update warning isn't dramatic, since in the past days we try to solve the mimetype issue there've have been some updates available. We'll resolve it when the mimetype issue is fixed.

I have finally figured out how to do that and its done,
Used the terminal but it said the file doesn’t exist, this is contained within a folder in home not documents so we are opening a folder with this contained within.
Tried to change it by dropping the word documents but it didn't work, tried other ways but still came back with the answer its a DIRECTORY that was using gedit and others.

Roger, while typing the password there'll be no feedback, like stars or something, but it'll still be recognized, so just concentrate while typing it and afterwards press [Enter] key.
> sudo updateb
This is wrong. Please take note from written commands.
It's:
sudo updatedb
> tried locateflowers nothing happens in the terminal
Same mistake there.
It's:
locate flowers2011file.odt
The output of mimeapps.list in comment #83 isn't the content posted in comment #80

Assume you've saved the file mimeapps.list now with the content from comment #86.
Please open Nautilus and try open a file with ending .odt either via double click on the file or via context menu and select libreoffice writer.
> no result from locate flowers2011file.odt
Please verify if it isn't in the directory where it was before.
Enter in a terminal:
cd /home/roger/
ls -al
Does it appear there?
Or did you actually remove it? If yes try another .odt file as suggested above.

The documents folder obiously doesn't exist, although it's a standard folder in Ubuntu.
Anyway, as from your comment #76
> have noticed that a lot of files are listed as HTML
the files you're trying to open have been saved as a completely .html, please have a look at the output yourself.
This happens when you save a web page within web browser via the menu
file -> save page as ...
The dialog window options are e.g. to save it only as .html or as web page completely, if you select completely it creates a folder and within the folder is the web page.
For example
## this is a folder
drwxr-xr-x 3 roger roger 4096 2011-12-12 08:24 flowers 2011_files
## this is a file
-rw-rw-r-- 1 roger roger 21427 2011-12-12 08:27 flowers 2011.html
Same there
## is a folder
drwxr-xr-x 2 roger roger 4096 2011-01-06 20:03 PAST TIMES_files
## is a file
-rw-r--r-- 1 roger roger 43194 2011-01-06 20:04 PAST TIMES.html
If you open a file via terminal for example like this:
firefox PAST TIMES.html
it's displayed in Firefox.
Libreoffice can open the file, but of course it'll display the html code too, that's why you see frames and other features.
libreoffice -o PAST TIMES.html
If you look in libreoffice menu 'view' you'll see that it's displayed as 'weblayout'.
Another example from the output is this.
-rw-rw-r-- 1 roger roger 24 2011-12-03 23:12 doc3
which you can try to open with:
libreoffice -o doc3
If it's a textfile it'll be displayed properly.
If you actually don't know what kind of file it is, you can either try the GUI way, open Nautilus file manager, right click on the file to display it's properties or select in context menu the application suggested or select 'open with another application...'.
## Usually the latter isn't necessary since mimetypes are properly recognized and offer the standard applications, selecting a different application will write a new entry to mimeapps.list.
Or you can diagnose the mimetype via terminal:
mimetype -a doc3
