root su sudo permissions and Nautilus?

Asked by WacoJohn

Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit. I understand 'sudo su' in TERMINAL. Allows me root privileges so I can copy, move, delete, rename etc etc. As an old DOS user, this stuff was easy.

I use sudo su then want to copy a file from my desktop to two particular folders deep into the file system and having problems doing that. Just cannot seem to get the structure right.

So, found a windows explorer type 'thing' Places/Home Folder ... help/about calls it Nautilus 2.24.1 It should work for someone who has been using Windows Exporer for the last 10 years but I find it is restricted by permissions, .. can't become user root within it. Makes it fairly useless.

The question is, how do I use Nautilus (or any other type application) to copy, move, delete, rename etc etc objects when I cannot become user root within the application?

Sorry to be so ignorant. Pretty new at Ubuntu/Linux.

As a suggestion please don't use too much Nautilus as root user (i never use it as root) or will find some permissions issue when you are using applications software as unprivileged user.

Please prefer to change owner (and or permissions) of files you want manage...

Thank you

Thank you for giving this rookie good advice, and I want to follow that advice.

Now, it brings up the question, .. how to use Nautilus (or any other 'explorer' type file manage)r effectively, ... or am I stuck using terminal?

su sudo in terminal solves the permissions problem, but I spent hours trying to copy a file from a desktop folder to two other folders deep down in the 'tree'. I never figured it out. Nautilus was a dream come true. What do I need to learn?

thank you.
