Please download and install Ubuntu 8.04 as it has a longer support cycle, the .10's support is quite short but the .04's are the main major release.

There are 4 main ways to retain and protect your data. The third way is probably the best, perhaps with 1 of the first 2 in case it doesn't work (it often doesn't). The 4th way is probably safest and fastest but will need work reinstalling your favourite apps.

1. Burn your entire "/home" folder and a few other things to cd/dvd/usb stick or something
2. Partition off a chunk of hard-drive space, move your "/Home" folder onto it and set Ubuntu to recognise it as your main data storage
3. During the install when you get to the partitioning section choose "Manual Partitioning" instead of "Guided" or automatic or anything and then make sure you see an unticked box saying "Format Partition?" (or untick it)
4. Partition off 6Gb, or so, of your hard-drive and install 8.04 to that. This way sets up a dual boot so that you can keep working witth 7.10 until 8.04 is fully working for you - this guide may help ...

Good luck with this
